Apple’s recent ascent past the $500 billion valuation level got me interested in 13f holders of the stock over the years. Let’s run a few queries and see whose profited from the stock.
Whalewisdom’s 13f database goes back to the March 2011 quarter. From March 31, 2001 to Dec. 31, 2012 there have been 44 13f filing quarters. 37 filers held Apple for all 44 quarters. Most are obviously the large institutional investors.
The table below shows a list of filers sorted by average percent of portfolio and having held Apple for at least 20 quarters. This table is more interesting since it includes the more aggressive hedge funds. The now defunct Season’s Capital held Apple from 2003 through its closing in 2010. Season’s average percent of portfolio is skewed due to its 6/30/2010 filing which listed only Apple and American Tower Corp as holdings in what would be its final 13f filing. John Kleinheinz’s Kleinheinz Capital Partner’s is another notable fund that has made Apple a key position for most of the past decade and still has Apple as it’s top holding (as of 12/31/2011).
