A frequently  requested feature for Whalewisdom has been for the ability to do bulk downloading of 13F data.  This has been available for several years through the live data feed service for enterprise users, but users with the standard subscription have been forced to download data one filer or stock at a time.  And while semi-automation of bulk downloading via the Whalewisdom API is possible, it requires a certain technical knowledge that prohibits many users from taking advantage of it.

To address this issue, I’m preparing to release two new API commands that will allow for easier bulk downloading of 13F data.  My current thinking is to update the subscription model as well.  A tiered model will be introduced to better handle the increased load from bulk downloading.  The current standard subscription features will remain the same, but include the ability to download 13F data for up to 10 filers and 10 stocks per quarter.  A new “Pro” subscription will be introduced and include the ability to download up to 50 filers and 50 stocks per quarter.  A new Excel Add-in will also be made available for download with the Pro subscription.

The Excel Add-in includes tools to easily let you pull 13F data from the Whalewisdom API directly into Excel without needing to understand the technical details of the API.  The Add-in currently lets you select a group of filers or group of stocks and will pull the latest 13F data for them, optionally augmented with any Schedule 13D/G filings that have been released after the 13F filing date.   An initial instruction manual is available for anyone to download and look at to give you an idea of the features initially coming out.

I’m looking for a few BETA testers for the new Excel Add-in.  I’m not only interested in getting help finding bugs, but also in getting any suggestions for features to include.  Let me know how you use Excel with Whalewisdom and what improvements can be made for an easier experience.  Please contact me at contact@whalewisdom.com if you’re interested.

Also I would love to hear any suggestions or thoughts on the proposed change in the subscription service.  Just send me an email or comment directly to this post.
