Business Description
Capital Investment Counsel, Inc. ("Counsel") was founded in 1984 by Richard K. Bryant and E. O. "Bobby" Edgerton, Jr. Counsel provides professional investment counseling services to individual investors, pension and profit-sharing plans, corporations, trusts, and estates. The firm is owned by R. Bryant Family Partners, Ltd., a partnership managed by Mr. Bryant. As of January 31, 2025, Capital Investment Counsel had a total of $889,391,757 in assets under management, all of which were managed on a discretionary basis. Counsel is an asset management firm dedicated to serving the specific needs of its clients through individually-tailored portfolios in the equity and fixed-income markets, on a discretionary basis. They do not manage money through portfolio “models”. Instead, they focus on selecting individual positions in publicly-traded companies of all market capitalizations and fixed income securities, while focusing on a disciplined process designed to manage risk for the investor. Counsel is affiliated with two brokerage firms (Capital Investment Group, Inc. and Capital Investment Brokerage, Inc.), and two investment advisory firms (Capital Investment Advisory Services, LLC, and Capital Advisers, Inc.).
Investment Strategy
The firm utilizes a "5 Point" Investment Philosophy featuring Tax Advantaged Investing and Multiplication of Stocks and Dividends. This involves emphasizing cash-rich, financially strong companies at deep discounts, reinvesting dividends and interest, emphasizing savings or additional contributions, minimizing tax liability by focusing on long-term capital gains, and potentially "multiplying" positions by selling and reinvesting in multiple positions for diversification if a position significantly exceeds intrinsic value. The firm's investment style focuses on investing in companies that are financially strong, out-of-favor, and near historically low valuations. Stock selections are complemented with bond holdings based on the client's investment objectives. The firm offers four general portfolio types: growth, growth and income, balanced, and income, which can be customized. The firm also manages accounts through individually-tailored portfolios in the equity and fixed income markets, on a discretionary basis.
