Anglo American plc engages in the mining of platinum, diamonds, coal, base metals, ferrous metals, and industrial minerals worldwide. It mines, processes, refines, and markets platinum group metals, such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium from its mines in the Limpopo and northwest provinces of South Africa. The company, through its interest in De Beers Investments, engages in the exploration, mining, and marketing of diamonds, as well as the sorting, valuing, and sale of rough gem diamonds. Its base metals operations include its interests in six copper properties in Chile, which produce copper, molybdenum, and silver; the Namakwa mineral sands mine and plants in South Africa, which produce titanium dioxide, zircon, rutile, and associated by-products; the Lisheen zinc mine in Ireland, and the Black Mountain and Skorpion zinc mines in southern Africa, producing zinc, lead, copper, and silver; and the Codemin nickel and Catalao niobium mines in Brazil, and the Loma de Niquel mine in Venezuela. Anglo American produces ferrous metals, including iron ore, carbon steel, manganese, and vanadium from its operations in South Africa, Australia, and North and South America. It also produces and exports coal from its interests in coal mines located in South Africa, Australia, and South America. The company produces gold through its interests in open pit and underground mines and surface reclamation plants in South America, Africa, and the United States. In addition, it produces crushed rock, sand and gravel, asphalt, concrete and mortar, lime, and cement, as well as phosphate fertilizers, phosphoric acid, and sodium tripolyphosphate. Further, Anglo American grows wood for pulp, and manufactures packaging paper; converted packaging products, including corrugated packaging, bags, and flexible packaging; and office paper.
