Visicu, Inc. was founded in March 1998 by two Johns Hopkins Hospital intensivists determined to improve patient care in the ICU. It is a healthcare information technology and clinical solutions company focused on transforming the delivery of hospital-based critical care through its eICU Program. Its eICU Program is an advanced remote monitoring system for ICUs that allows hospitals to help improve patient treatment outcomes by leveraging their scarce critical care trained staff to monitor ICU patients more frequently and to intervene earlier to prevent or manage crises. eICU Program consists of an eICU Center with direct data, video and audio links with ICU patient rooms and its eCareManager suite of software products. In the eICU Center, intensivists and critical care nurses use multiple screens at eCareManager workstations to monitor real-time data, current visual status, care plan, diagnostic results and treatment history for each patient. Visicu focuses on delivering effective implementation, user training and workflow redesign and ongoing support services as an integral part of its eICU Program. The Company sells its eICU Program primarily to multi-hospital systems and networks of community and rural hospitals. It uses a direct sales model. The Company's sales representatives have experience in healthcare related direct sales and are trained in the eICU Program and the needs of its potential customers. Visicu's sales strategy includes identifying potential customers in various regions and then qualifying a subgroup in each region that will then become the focus of the sales effort. Marketing strategy is designed to generate qualified sales leads and build awareness of the eICU Program as a more effective alternative to the traditional management of ICUs. Visicu sells its eICU Program primarily to multi-hospital systems. The Company's Customer Support department is designed to ensure that its systems are fully operational and that any customer problems are quickly resolved. It provides 24-hour per day, 365-day per year service and support for the software. eCareManager suite of software products operate on its customers' networks. Visicu follows a formal product development process based on a two-year product development plan and employ dedicated product development personnel. The Company is actively developing additional products and applications for its products designed to better serve the customers and expand its revenue opportunities. It focuses its new release efforts on five areas: architecture; usability; new functions; integration; and support/installation. Visicu relies on a combination of trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, patents and patent applications, licenses and employee and third-party nondisclosure agreements and other protective measures to protect its proprietary technology and brand. Its trademarks include VISICU(r), eICU(r), eVantage(r), SmartAlerts(r), eCareMobiletm, eCareManagertm, eLerttm and its logo. The Company markets, sells, and distributes its products and services in the heavily regulated U.S. healthcare industry. As of December 31, 2005, Visicu had 94 employees.
