Hecla Mining Company is a provider of precious and base metals to the United States economy and worldwide. The Company acquires, develops, produces, and markets silver, gold, lead and zinc. Hecla Mining Company produces lead, zinc and bulk concentrates, which it sells to custom smelters, and unrefined gold bullion bars (dore), which may be sold as dore or further refined before sale to precious metals traders. During the year ended December 31, 2008, the Company was organized into three segments, which represent its operating units and exploration interests: The Greens Creek unit; The Lucky Friday unit, and The San Sebastian unit and various exploration activities in Mexico. On July 8, 2008, the Company completed the sale of El Callao Gold Mining Company and Drake-Bering Holdings B.V., its wholly owned subsidiaries, which together owned its business and operations in Venezuela. On November 6, 2008, the Company acquired Independence Lead Mines Company. From 1920 Mining Manual:Property: 29 patented claims, 347 acres, near Burke, also mill-site at Gem.Geology: ore is chiefly silver-lead sulphides accompanied by sphalerite and pyrite, occurring in the Hecla lode; strike N. W.-S. E., with average dip 80 to X. E. General country rock is sericitic Burke quartzitc. The lode is intimately associated with a lamphrophyric dike, which has an average width of 2'. Ore averages 5' to 6' in width, occurs mainly in the quartzite on one or both sides of the dike, and, to a large extent, fills fissures. The pay-shoot has an extreme length of 1,200'. The Hecla ore carries lead and silver, and that of Ore-Or-Xo-Go carries zinc as well. For geology of Coeur d'Alene district, see U. S. G. S. Prof. Paper No. 62, published in 1908; also paper by Oscar A. Hershey, published by M. and S. Press. In November, 1919, it was reported that the Federal M. & S. Co., for the Marsh Mines Consolidated was to institute an apex suit against the Hecla, alleging ore was wrongly extracted from the east orebody of the Hecla. The Gertie M. Co. also started suit in January, 1920.Development: is by tunnel and shaft. Extensions amounted to 6.420' in 1916; 12,386' in 1917, and 13,566' in 1918.The main shaft was 2,000' deep in 1918, at which depth a station, sump, and skip-pocket were cut and the vein cut, the drift showing ore 12" wide. Work continued on the East orebody between No. 3 adit and the 900* level; also from No. 2 shaft level to 1,200' on the Ore-Or-No-Go orebody.Reserves were estimated at 1,296.000 tons in 1916; 1,326.399 tons in 1917; 1,584,115 tons in 1918, and 1,549,833 tons in 1919, plus 750,000 tons probable.Equipment: the property is one of the best equipped in the district, with hoists, compressors, machine-shops, and a 500-ton concentrator. The mill at Gem has a flotation unit. Electric haulage was started in 1917.In 1917 company made a very favorable 5-year contract with the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. for the smelting of its lead-silver ore and concentrate at the Kellogg plant. Prior to this arrangement these products were sent to Tooele, Utah. The Hecla mine, though unsuccessful in its early years, has become one of the steady dividend-payers of the district. The property is kept up to a high standard, is efficiently managed, and costs are low.
